CHAPTER TWENTY

"What am I looking at?" J.D. asked.

"You tell me, he-ro," Ghost's voice answered from the overhead speakers.

J.D. sighed and considered once again that all of this might be a colossal waste of his time.

Bright and early, Sheriff Greene had responded to him regarding Ginny's cell phone ping— the phone was either off or destroyed, and currently untraceable. The cell tower history, however, ended just east of Grimville, Pennsylvania.

Greene was in touch with Berks county law enforcement and J.D. was already planning his trip to Pennsylvania. But first, he had wanted to give Ghost the benefit of the doubt. And so here he sat, in Tony Blackwell's basement, gazing at an image projected on a pull-down screen in front of the CB equipment. It was a satellite photo, of a compound in the midst of some desert.

"Secluded, security checkpoint, guard towers, helipad… military installation. Where is this?"

"Saudi Arabia," Tony said from where he sat in his reclining desk chair. On the floor between them, Frosty lay sprawled on his belly, muzzle between his forelegs. "Roughly thirty miles from the gulf coast."

"Okay so it's a Saudi installation."

"Not a known one," Tony countered.

"So it's a secret Saudi installation."

"I got eyes and ears everywhere, my man," Ghost said. "And a whole lotta little birdies told me that someone high up broke off from the Network and created a splinter group. And this installation, they say, is one of that group's black sites."

J.D. rubbed his forehead. "What the fuck does any of this have to do with Ginny?"

"You need to get with the program, Juan. Werewolves are real. The Network hunts, and experiments on, werewolves. And the Network most likely believes that your sister got knocked up by… a fucking werewolf. Even with all that, there's no indication in the backchannels that the Network has Ginny. That leaves our little splinter group. Some Network fucker goes rogue and then your sis goes off the radar? That ain't no coincidence. I think the Network decided not to act on your sister, at least not yet… but the splinter group did."

J.D. was standing in front of the satellite image, the projection texture-mapping his face. "I'm supposed to take your word on all this? How could I trust a single thing you say when you won't even show your goddamned face?"

He could feel his blood rising. So far, he had gone along with this because he hoped to get close to Ghost, and he hoped that maybe the idiot would have some real, definitive intelligence to provide.

"And there's something you're conveniently forgetting, isn't there? If this werewolf shit is true then the reason for all of this is you! YOU supplied that guy Brandon with the wrong pills. And if that's true, then my sister nearly died on that ship because of you!" J.D. was pointing his finger at the nearest speaker. "And everyone who died on board the Rapture died because of you, too, you piece of shit!"

Tony sat up. "J.D., listen—"

J.D. held up his hand, already turned away and heading for the stairs.
